| Introduction: The purpose of hospitalization is to provide important medical and paramedical care. Length of stay increases with the complexity of the underlying pathology. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between length of hospital stay and severity of odontogenic cervico- facial cellulitis (OFCC).
Method: This was an analytical, retrospective study including the complete records of patients hospitalized for OFCC in two hospitals in Yaoundé between January 2019 and January 2024. Sociodemographic data, infection severity score according to Rose’s classification, and length of stay were collected. Univariate analysis was performed using SPSS software version 26.0 to search for associations between variables. The significance threshold was set at 5% (0.05).
Results: Over a five-year period, we collected data on 126 patients, of whom 80 (63.5%) were male. Mean age was 39.83±17.4 years. Patients had a secondary education in 60.3% of cases (n=76); they were single in 46.8% of cases (n=59). In our series, according to Rose’s classification, a low- severity infection (score < 15) was present in 75.4% of cases (n=95). The mean length of hospital stay was 10±6.2 days. Age (p=0.001), level of education (p=0.025), profession (p=0.005), and length of hospital stay (p=0.001) were significantly associated with infection severity.
Conclusion: Taking the length of stay into account in the management of OFCCs could improve therapeutic outcomes and reduce requests for sick leave.
